Suggested Summer Reading Lists (English)

The summer months are filled with many exciting activities for you and your child.  As you plan your quality time together, don't forget to include the relaxation of reading.  The Harris County Public Libraries and the Ft. Bend Public Libraries have excellent summer reading programs for children.  Plan frequent visits and model the enjoyment of books.  Reading skills must be practiced just as sports and music activities are rehearsed.  The reading habits your child develops today will remain throughout his lifetime.

The elementary library media specialists of the Katy Independent School District have developed a suggested reading list appropriate for your child, as well as a list of web sites where you can locate the titles of other award-winning books.

Since reading abilities vary among children, some of the titles will be enjoyed independently while other selections will need to be shared with you.  As books are selected, consider special interests; however, it is also important to introduce a variety of subject matters.  Encourage your child to select both fiction and nonfiction titles.  Try to set aside a time each day to read and discuss the books together.  Read together as a family as frequently as possible.

Remember --- "A book is a gift that you can open again and again."  Have a safe and enjoyable summer.
